There's no place like home for Google

Search engine giant Google changed its name today to Topeka. The change was made to honor the city, whose mayor unofficially changed its name to Google as part of a project to get noticed for Google's High Speed Internet initiative.

Google wanted to honor the symbolism of the community with a creative, albeit non-permanent gesture in kind. According to a news report by New York Daily News staff writer Ethan Sacks reported a Google spokesman said that as of 1 AM (central daylight time) April 1st, "Google has officially changed our name to Topeka."

Other changes planned include referring to company employees as Topekans instead of "Googlers." and people will now be topeka'ed instead of googled.

The news couldn't come at a better time for the Kansas community. Facing budget woes and a lack of fiscal funding, Topeka should see increased tourism among other benefits. With the census being conducted presently, having billions more people added to the city's roster will mean increased state and federal funding for education, health care and economic development.

Sidney City Manager Gary Person is scheduled to meet with Topeka Mayor and city council next week to discuss implementation strategies and a proposal to change Sidney's name to Yahoo, Nebraska in an effort to capitalize on the publicity potential.

"You can't buy advertising like that," said Person.
